Grower Vacancy (part-time) near Monmouth.

Feb 22, 2018

Grower wanted to manage and run a half-acre walled garden at Old Lands near Monmouth, Monmouthshire.

We are looking for a grower to run a half-acre Victorian walled garden with a greenhouse and two polytunnels in a neighbouring orchard. The garden is run organically and no-dig and supplies a small on-site micro shop. The job offers a chance to develop the garden according to the vision of the candidate allowing them to plan the layout and crops grown. There is also the option to run the shop and to continue the hosting of gardening-related courses in the garden as additional income.

The current grower with 15 years of growing experience is moving on to a new job, and is offering to mentor whoever takes on the garden, to give a smooth transition and help the candidate to develop their skills. The candidate will need to be an energetic and motivated person with vision of how they want to develop the garden as a productive space. They will need to be open and a good team player to be a part of our friendly team. An excellent knowledge of growing and planting a garden to make it productive throughout the year is essential.

As the garden is open to visitors we also expect the garden to be kept in a presentable condition throughout the year. While we are offering 2 days per week, we expect the work to vary from 1.5 days in the winter to 3 days a week in the summer. This position could suit someone who has recently finished training in horticulture and wants to develop their skills and experience by running their own operation with support of an experienced grower. While the job is part time there is scope to increase the income or find local work to supplement income.

From September a small cottage will be available to rent on the estate.

Part-time salary: £10ph 2 days per week Self employed.
