Job Opportunity: Experienced Dairy Farmer, Aberdeenshire.

Aug 27, 2019

Newton Dee Camphill Community in Aberdeen is looking for an experienced and passionate Dairy Farmer, for their Bio-Dynamic Farm (Demeter certification).

Newton Dee farm is a biodynamic grass based mixed farm and the perfect place for passionate farmers who are also interested in social farming and community life.
The farmed land of the community comprises 70 hectares of land (62ha grassland, 7ha barley, 1 ha field vegetables). The farm produces and delivers milk, meat and eggs to the community thanks to the involvement of a team of 14 people, some of whom have special needs.
The dairy herd is composed of 28 dairy cows and youngstock (50 livestock units). The cows are milked once a day and are grass-fed. The farm also currently comprises 4 sows and offspring, 40 ewes, 150 hens and other poultry (hatchery) which are free range bred.

Newton Dee, on the doorstep of the City of Aberdeen, is a vibrant Camphill Community, with 180 people living and working there. The community members live together in households of varying sizes.
The farm is an integral part of our Community and a team of residents with and without disabilities is working together with the farmers. The land is managed by two separate teams, one emphasizing on the dairy herd, beef, sheep and poultry, the other on pigs and field vegetables.

Accommodation is available in the generous and charming farmhouse. The farmer/farmers would need to be willing and able to engage with and lead the team of residents. We expect an interest in and involvement with the community life on a social, cultural and managerial level. Newton Dee Community is working with a “Vocational Co-worker model”, which means Individuals who commit to living and working in Newton Dee are not receiving a salary, but have their needs met on a discretionary basis.

We welcome applications by couples, individuals or persons who feel they will be able to work together. Applicants would need knowledge in the overall management of an organic farm, experience and skills in the day to day work involved and the ability to work as part of a team.

In case you do not have prior knowledge or insight into bio-dynamic principles, a will to learn about and engage with these principles will be essential.

If you are interested and consider applying, please email recruitment@newtondee.org.uk and include your CV and contact details.
